Morena Baccarin, who portrays Vanessa in the live-action
Deadpool franchise, has expressed an MCU dream that I"m convinced would be perfect for Deadpool 4. While it is yet to be confirmed, I"m confident that it"s only a matter of time before Deadpool 4 will be greenlit thanks to the incredible success of Deadpool & Wolverine. After much anticipation for his MCU debut, Deadpool & Wolverine proved how well the Merc with a Mouth slots into the franchise without renouncing his R-rating.
Given that she was only afforded a fraction of screen time in the same movie, the same could not necessarily be said for Morena Baccarin"s Vanessa. Vanessa"s minuscule role in Deadpool & Wolverine paled in comparison to her debut in Deadpool and more closely resembled her small role in Deadpool 2. Two successive movies minimizing Vanessa"s role might suggest that this is destined to persist, but I"m hopeful that a much larger role awaits the character - a sentiment that Morena Baccarin herself seemingly shares.
Morena Baccarin Wants To Play Copycat In The MCU Baccarin Suggests That She Has Been Waiting For Years For Copycat's Debut Close Morena Baccarin"s desire to portray a live-action adaptation of the mutant Copycat has been years in the making. In an interview in ComicBook, while promoting Elevation,
Baccarin stated that she had been waiting "Five years," for the opportunity, adding "I’m not getting any younger or skinnier, so now’s the time." She reiterated the sentiment in an interview with The Playlist, asserting that Copycat would be a natural trajectory for Vanessa after she survived Deadpool 2 thanks to Deadpool"s jaunt through time. Being set up for a future appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine could facilitate this.
Related Every Mutant Confirmed To Exist In The MCU In a surprisingly short time, Marvel has introduced several mutants into the MCU. Here"s every mutant character confirmed to exist in Marvel"s world.
Posts I agree with Baccarin that
this is Vanessa"s obvious trajectory in the MCU. In the comics, Vanessa Carlysle is a mutant with the ability to shapeshift into other characters and imitate their powers—a power set similar to but ultimately more comprehensive than Mystique"s. She also shares a short-lived romance with Deadpool before joining up with Cable"s X-Force while disguised as Domino. Evidently, Deadpool 2 skipped out on adapting this particular narrative by temporarily killing off Vanessa and introducing the real Domino to Deadpool"s doomed team - but a future rendition would make for an intriguing dynamic.
Vanessa Becoming A Superhero Would Perfectly Change Deadpool's Dynamic Deadpool Would Care A Lot More About His Super-Team Close While Deadpool may have seemed distressed at the swift, brutal, but hilarious individual demise of his newly formed X-Force, it"s pretty plain to see that he doesn"t care for their wellbeing too much (Peter notwithstanding, of course). Instead,
Deadpool"s irreverence is tempered by a small collection of loved ones who become the core of his motivations in Deadpool & Wolverine. Vanessa is central among these.
It would fundamentally switch up Deadpool"s approach and perhaps even stifle his carefree attitude.
If Vanessa"s Copycat were to join another version of the X-Force, then, it would significantly alter Deadpool"s otherwise carefree approach to leading or working with a team. His typical nonchalance towards life (showcased succinctly with his comments leading to Johnny Storm"s unceremonious death in Deadpool & Wolverine) would be altered significantly by Vanessa"s inclusion in whatever mission they embark on.
It would fundamentally switch up Deadpool"s approach and perhaps even stifle his carefree attitude.
This could be a great route for Deadpool 4 to take. While Deadpool is beloved for his irreverence,
his tender moments with Vanessa and other loved ones help ground his character and afford him a level of depth that ensures he isn"t simply a font of comic relief. I am certain that Deadpool 4 should be just as replete with Deadpool"s iconic humor as previous outings, but to play with his usual dynamic and challenge his character would be a compelling watch that would help justify the sequel.
How Vanessa Could Become Copycat In The MCU Having Her Mutant Powers Awakened Is The Only Way This Would Make Sense Close There is one glaring issue when it comes to fulfilling Baccarin"s Copycat dreams. Namely, nowhere throughout the last three Deadpool movies has it been established that Vanessa is a mutant. To reveal such a core trait this late in the franchise might feel slightly contrived, even if Vanessa is based on the character from Marvel Comics. Then again,
Deadpool established that a latent mutant gene can be awoken, as this is what Ajax successfully achieved with Deadpool and his powerful healing factor - so the same could happen for Copycat.
Vanessa Carlyse also has blue skin in Marvel Comics, though this can be hidden through her shape-shifting abilities.
One of Copycat"s powers is to mimic the powers of those close to her, sometimes even involuntarily. Not only would revealing Vanessa to have had these powers all along feel too out-of-the-blue, but this would also mean that her death would have made no sense, as she could simply mimic Deadpool"s healing factor at the time. However Marvel decides to awaken Vanessa"s mutation in
Deadpool 4, however, I think it"s high time that Baccarin gets her wish and we"re introduced to one of Marvel"s lesser-known but no less compelling mutants.
Deadpool The merc with the mouth first appeared in an issue of New Mutants in 1990, and since then has gone on to get his own series and a massive cult following. With his incredible powers of healing and regeneration, Deadpool was initially depicted as an X-Men villain but went on to become an anti-hero. After getting his own movie series starting in 2016, the third Deadpool movie finally brings the wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
