Superman & Lois season 4 saw the biggest permanent death in the DC show so far once again manage to solve a problem for the characters within its story. The Superman & Lois season 4 cast of characters have had some major developments since the start of the show"s final chapter, with huge moments like Jonathan getting powers and Lex reuniting with his estranged daughter coming at a steady pace throughout. Perhaps the biggest of all of these comes in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 7, wherein Superman decides to reveal his secret identity to the world.
That said, this episode of the live-action Superman show also serves to reinforce the significance behind the most substantial permanent death in the series, making sure one now deceased character remains at the heart of the narrative. With few episodes left in Superman & Lois before its conclusion, this gesture is all the more noteworthy - especially since it also further teases how said character is likely to influence the Superman & Lois season 4 finale as well.
Sam Lane's Death Helps Solve Another Superman & Lois Problem In Season 4 Close Superman & Lois season 4, episode 7 puts the Smallville Gazette at risk after Chrissy Beppo - who runs the paper alongside Lois - reveals she"s been looking at selling her share in it in order to fund a new house for her soon-to-be-born child to grow up in. While a company is ready to snap up Chrissy"s offer, she works out this is a company secretly owned by Lex Luthor, and is instead willing to sacrifice her hopes and dreams to be able to protect Clark and Lois from having to deal with Luthor owning even part of the Gazette.
However, this plot ends up with a much better resolution, as
Clark and Lois reveal Sam Lane left them a considerable amount of money that he"d saved over the years, and that they will instead buy the Gazette so that everyone is happy. Given how integral Lois" journalism career is to her - and how Lex Luthor getting anywhere near owning the Smallville Gazette would"ve no doubt made Lois and Clark"s lives hell - this lets Lois" since-passed father have yet another moment of significance in the story following his death earlier in the season.
Superman & Lois Is Right To Keep Making Sam Lane's Death Matter For The Show
Sam Lane"s death in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 was a major moment for the series, as while Superman did appear to die earlier in the season, it was clear there was at least a good chance he"d be revived and recover - whereas General Lane"s death is a far more permanent affair. With so much going on in the season, it seemed like Sam Lane"s sacrifice might be forgotten by the story, but mercifully, the show has thus far managed to keep the ghost of the General in focus in major and minor ways throughout later releases.
The most obvious way Sam Lane remains significant to the story is, of course, in the fact that his heart was given to Superman to replace his missing Kryptonian organ, allowing Clark to come back to the land of the living at the seeming cost of limiting how much he can use his powers and operate as a superhero. That said,
approaching the aftermath of his death in smaller ways like discussing Lois" inheritance is also useful too, as this addresses his passing in more grounded terms as well, rather than solely focusing on the more superhero-specific type of storyline.
Sam Lane's Death Is Already Set To Affect The Final Episodes Of Superman & Lois Too
Sam Lane"s death has already been set up by the show to have significance in terms of the ending of Superman & Lois as well, since
any final fights will take place without Sam"s help or his military backup and resources, which have come in handy several times before for the show"s heroes. It"s clear Lex is teeing up to face off against Superman and his allies at least once more before the show is done, as Superman & Lois season 4, episode 6 closed with a major tease of his warsuit, which is sure to present some problems for Clark and those supporting him.
Similarly, the question of whether Sam Lane"s heart will be able to stand up to the trials Clark"s Kryptonian powers put it through is one likely at the center of the final Superman & Lois episodes, as well as being integral for what the show suggests Superman"s life is like after the series wraps. With it looking like
Superman & Lois could close with General Lane having been its biggest death, ensuring his sacrifice remains a significant part of these final episodes seems like the best way to pay off the story of one of the show"s longest-running characters.
Superman & Lois season 4 airs new episodes on Monday nights at 8/7c on The CW.
