I"m Still Furious About Deadpool & Wolverine"s Chris Evans Human Torch Vs Pyro Fight

While Deadpool & Wolverine saw the Fox X-Men universe collide with the MCU, there was one crossover that I'm struggling to get my head around, the Pyro and Human Torch fight. Obviously, there is a long history to Marvel that extends back much further than the movies, with the comics dating back to 1939. Following this, many of the most popular characters that exist in these stories were introduced in the 1960s.
Over the last 30 or so years, many of these heroes have made their way from the pages of the comics to the big screen, which has brought tons of spectacular comic book moments to live action. While the movies have taken liberties and made adjustments to fit within the MCU storyline, they generally follow the same rough outline. However, the fight with Johnny Storm fighting against Pyro completely contradicted the comic books that inspired them.
I'm Angry Pyro Won The Fight Against Johnny Storm In Deadpool & Wolverine The Human Torch Is Significantly More Powerful Than Pyro Close Of course, I understand that to progress the story in the movie, Deadpool and Wolverine needed to be captured by the nomads. Within the group, there were close to a dozen villains ready to square up against Deadpool and Wolverine, but then backup arrives in the form of Johnny Storm, played by Chris Evans. Honestly, it would have been pretty simple for Deadpool and Wolverine to take down the villains on their own, but with the added help of the Human Torch to get Pyro under control, this fight should have been a breeze.

Deadpool & Wolverine delivered on a bit of fan-casting with Henry Cavill appearing as a multiverse version of Hugh Jackman"s X-Men hero. While it seems unlikely he"ll reprise the role beyond the movie, fans have been sharing their thoughts on who Cavill should play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he made his debut as Superman in the DC Extended Universe"s Man of Steel. Though Captain Britain and Cyclops remain the more popular choices, I personally think it would be intriguing to see him either play Nova, particularly since there"s a TV show in the works for the character, or even Mephisto, as I think he could both deliver on the Devil"s power as much as evil charm.
Instead, Johnny flies up into the air, and Pyro easily puts out his flame, causing him to come flailing down and be captured. But the thing is, not only is this a completely inaccurate depiction of a fight between Pyro and Human Torch according to the comics, but it was far too easy for Pyro. These are two fire-powered characters, but they both work with fire in very different ways, and it ultimately made Johnny appear much weaker than the character has ever been.
Aaron Stanford's Explanation For Pyro Winning Ignores Johnny Storm's Story Pyro Manipulates Fire, But Johnny Storm Creates It Close Aaron Stanford, the man who reprized his role as Pyro from the X-Men movies explained why this was the outcome, but it only covers half the story. Stanford explained that the fight was meant to be more intense and evenly matched, but during filming, he had an epiphany. Since Pyro has fire powers, this is the perfect opponent for him, because Johnny Storm relies on flames to fight. But, I just don't believe enough consideration was given to Johnny's character in this conversation.
[indent] I think the initial idea was for it to be a real struggle, a real battle between two superpowers. But, as we were filming, I realized that, for Pyro, it's not a battle because this is what he does, and he has now found himself up against the ideal opponent because it's not a struggle. For him, this is the easiest thing in the world. Anybody else he was up against, it would be difficult. But for him, this is like a snap. So we figured out, alright, he should suck all the flame out, and then he just winks it out like it's nothing.
[/indent] Yes, Pyro can control fire, and in the comics, he has been able to send the Human Torch flying like Magneto does with Wolverine. However, there are important distinctions. Pyro can't create fire, he can only manipulate it, while Johnny can harness and create fire and heat energy. In addition, Johnny is impervious to damage from flames, while Pyro can be harmed by fire. Yes, Pyro may have been able to manipulate Johnny's flames, but Johnny should have been able to retaliate, and create more.
Chris Evans' Johnny Storm Deserves Redemption After Deadpool & Wolverine Johnny Storm Could Be Invaluable Against Doctor Doom Close The depiction of Johnny which appears in Deadpool & Wolverine was ultimately downplayed to a ridiculous extent. For that reason, it feels like this is not the same character who went up against Doctor Doom in the 2005 movie, and its sequel. This is a weaker, more naive, and less imaginative version, and I will not be satisfied until we get the real Johnny Storm back in the MCU. Fortunately, the MCU has the perfect upcoming film to redeem the hero, and get Evans back in on the action in a more meaningful way.

When Avengers: Secret Wars comes out in 2027, the movie is expected to feature a huge variety of characters from across the multiverse. With Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to play Doctor Doom in the MCU, this would be a perfect moment to bring Evans back as a powered up Johnny Storm, and have him fight RDJ's Doom. Not only would the symmetry be immaculate with Chris Evans and RDJ returning in new roles, which also pay homage to older roles, but it would be the perfect moment to prove that Johnny is more than a gorgeous oaf that can be overpowered by lesser villains like Pyro as seen in Deadpool & Wolverine.
