Now that Jason Momoa has been cast as
Lobo in the new DC Universe, an exciting development makes me believe that we are very close to getting the DC version of the Deadpool movies.
James Gunn"s DC Universe is off to a solid start. I have thoroughly enjoyed Creature Commandos, the TV-MA animated series that kicked off the new franchise, and it sets up many exciting corners of the DCU to be explored in future DC movies and TV shows. That seems to be a trend in the DCU"s Chapter One.
Like Creature Commandos, Gunn"s Superman movie, my most anticipated superhero release of 2025, will include multiple DCU characters in addition to David Corenswet"s Clark Kent. The same can be said of multiple other reported or announced DCU projects. I like the focus on worldbuilding as the franchise begins, and including established heroes and villains to show the history of this lived-in universe is the best way to go. Due to that, I was happy to hear that
Jason Momoa will play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, confirming a major DCU canon character who I feel is destined for more.
Deadpool 2's Director Wants To Make A Lobo Movie It Would Be A Match Made In Heaven Close I"m happy that DC found a way to keep Jason Momoa around, even if it means losing his Aquaman. I always understood that the actor would not play Arthur Curry in the new DCU, as it would be weird to recast the DCEU"s Justice League and only keep Momoa as his previous character. As Lobo,
Gunn"s DCU could use Momoa for years to come, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow only serving as the first of many possible projects for the star as the DC Comics bounty hunter, and there is already the perfect follow-up for Momoa at DC.
David Leitch and Jason Momoa recently worked together on The Fall Guy.
After it was announced that Momoa would be playing Lobo, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch suggested a Lobo movie with Momoa. The actor shared the news on Instagram, where
Leitch commented, saying, "Let"s do a Lobo feature." I would love to see that happen for a few reasons. Since Gunn confirmed R-rated movies are planned for the DCU, Momoa"s Lobo could star in a solo film that is every bit as violent and raunchy as the character should be. Leitch knows that tone well, as he directed Deadpool 2, making him perfect for "The Main Man," as Lobo is called.
Jason Momoa Has Shown He Can Shine At The Box Office The Actor Has A Successful Past At DC Close From 2016 forward, Momoa has cemented himself as a bankable movie star. When I first saw the actor in a project,
playing Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, I knew he was destined for bigger roles. Both at DC and other franchises, Momoa has made himself a household name that directors and studios can look for when casting their biggest projects. While I don"t think Lobo is necessarily a major DC character, with Momoa playing him, Lobo"s ruthless and funny persona, allied with his violent nature, can shine bright at the box office.

Based on Momoa"s string of hits in recent years, I think it would be wise for DC to take David Leitch up on that offer and get a Lobo movie rolling after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Momoa starred in the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, Aquaman, which ended its worldwide run with $1.13 billion. While the actor"s second solo outing as Aquaman fell way below the original, the DCEU movie still managed to rack up $433.8 million as the franchise was on its way out. Allied to Momoa"s other hits, the actor can realistically lead a successful Lobo movie.
An R-Rated Lobo Movie Is What The Character And Jason Momoa Deserve The DCU Can Thrive By Mixing Different Tones
With David Leitch wanting to make a Lobo movie, Jason Momoa cast as the character, and the star"s recent streak of box office hits, I don"t see how DC could pass on such a promising opportunity. Momoa and Lobo deserve the chance to see such a project explode and take over the superhero medium. I think
Lobo is a character who has the potential to do remarkably well in live-action due to how audiences and critics have embraced more adult and bloody superhero movies and shows like the Deadpool franchise, Peacemaker, and now Creature Commandos.
