David Ayer"s Suicide Squad 2 Would"ve Brought Back Scott Eastwood With A Twist: "There Was Talk About Making Me Into Another Character"

If David Ayer"s Suicide Squad 2 had gone forward, the DCEU sequel would have included a big surprise for one of the remaining 2016 cast members. Despite being one of the few financially successful movies in the DCEU movie timeline, a proper sequel to Suicide Squad never came to fruition with Ayer at the helm. Instead, James Gunn"s The Suicide Squad went forward, using elements of the original 2016 film while incorporating many new characters, but some have wondered what Ayer had potentially planned for his sequel.
ScreenRant"s Liam Crowley recently interviewed Scott Eastwood for his upcoming film Alarum and was able to revisit the actor"s short time in the DCEU when he appeared in 2016"s Suicide Squad. While Eastwood portrayed original character GQ Edwards, there were theories that he was actually meant to play a DC character, as the actor was asked if he ever heard those rumors back in the day. Surprisingly, there was meant to be a twist for Eastwood"s character, despite getting killed off, as the star revealed that not only was he going to be in a potential Suicide Squad 2, but he would have been revealed to be a different character.
Liam Crowley: It"s cool to see you in the lead role as well because my introduction to you, Scott, was eight years ago in your supporting role in Suicide Squad with David Ayer. I don"t know how online you are when it comes to people talking about films in anticipation, but Lieutenant GQ, everyone thought you were going to be secretly Dick Grayson. Did that rumor ever make it back to you? You ever hear about that?
Scott Eastwood: I know that there was talk about making me into another character and coming back. It just... David Ayer didn"t direct that next film then. I was like, "Look, let"s just see. Let"s see what the next thing holds. Is it a cool character? Who is it?" And that never came around because he didn"t direct the film, so it was a different movie.
Liam Crowley: Would we have known more about your character in his director"s cut?
Scott Eastwood: I think so. I don"t know if I"ve ever seen his director"s cut. Is it available to watch?
Liam Crowley: It"s in a vault somewhere. We"re all begging for it. Just like you.
Scott Eastwood: I"ve never seen it.
Liam Crowley: Can you tell us who your character would"ve been? Is that public knowledge?
Scott Eastwood: No, because they didn"t know. They were just talking about who he could come back as, and we could make him somebody and this and that, and they hadn"t really landed on any of that.
With James Gunn"s new DC Universe up and running, which has many movies and TV shows coming up, Crowley also asked Eastwood whether he sees himself ever returning to the world of DC. Eastwood stressed that he is a huge Batman fan, and revealed what he enjoys the most about the Dark Knight.
Liam Crowley: Wow. Well, if it"s a story that never gets told, fortunately DC"s in a cool spot right now. Rebooting everything. I know you"ve auditioned for superhero roles in the past and you"ve obviously been in a couple of comic book movies. Are there any DC roles that you have your eye on that you"d like to take a crack at?
Scott Eastwood: I mean, I think out of the DC universe, I"m definitely a Batman guy. I"m definitely a Batman guy. I think he"s the most interesting character because he is living double lives that are kind of a little bit more intriguing to me than some of the other ones. Yeah, I don"t know. There"s something cool about that character.
What Scott Eastwood's Suicide Squad 2 Comments Mean Close From everything that Eastwood was able to tease about his role in the Suicide Squad 2 movie, this wouldn"t be the first time a comic book film pulled a twist like that. There have been many instances where an actor gets cast as one character, either a small comic book character or an original creation, only to be revealed to be someone else, potentially even a bigger player from the comic canon. This has been a way to play with audience expectations, especially those who are big comic readers.
Even though Eastwood didn"t specify if his Suicide Squad 2 twist would have revealed GQ Edwards to be someone from the comics, it would have made perfect sense to establish him as someone from the DC Universe. Whether or not that would have been Dick Grayson/Nightwing, as some old rumors suggested, remains to be seen. It is likely that Eastwood"s character would have been a DC character who would have made sense for the larger context of the Suicide Squad.
Our Take On Scott Eastwood's Suicide Squad 2 Comments Given that Eastwood was one of the bigger names attached to 2016"s Suicide Squad, it doesn"t come as a shock that Ayer had plans for him to appear in Suicide Squad 2 and be revealed as a different character. Had Ayer"s original Suicide Squad cut been released, it definitely sounds like there would have been more clues as to who "GQ Edwards" was actually meant to be in the DCEU. Unless Ayer ever reveals it himself, the world can only speculate about who Eastwood"s Suicide Squad 2 character would have been.
Alarum opens in theaters on January 17.
